Most of the magnesium in the body is intracellular. Therefore, serum magnesium is not a very good marker for the overall magnesium situation in the body. Decreased concentrations in serum are seen in e.g. intestinal dysfunction. 

Indications

Determining the magnesium balance. Decreased concentrations are seen in e.g. intestinal dysfunction. 

Sample

1.0 mL of serum (min. 0.5 mL) or Li-heparin plasma. Haemolysis interferes with the assay. 

Storage and delivery 

Delivery at room temperature, if it arrives within 24 hours. Can be stored refrigerated over the weekend.
